What makes me thrill?

In 2012, I was a university professor and started my early-stage startup investment with the concept of “sponsorship”. I suggested to my friends who are confident that they can read the changes of the future, “We also do meaningful things to support the growth of companies with fresh ideas.” It was the beginning of the Big Bang Angels.

At that time, angel investment was a kind of hobby. In the next eight years, fortunately, several companies have grown and made a return on investment. Thanks to the angel investors around us, we were able to create a portfolio. Three years ago, as a TIPS partner, I started to meet more deep-tech companies.

A medical company with no sales within three years. Companies in the fields of chemistry, physics and medicine where I have difficulty judging technical maturity. Alternative food, bioinformatics, seedling technology companies, and agricultural technology companies. However, one of my recent thoughts is, “Why should I invest in a company like this?”

Why am I going to go beyond the fields of content, commerce, communication, and community-based IT services that I am familiar with, and go to areas where I have to study too much? The sentence that comes to my mind is really about solving an important problem in society.”

What’s valuable to me for the rest of my life? Making more money is just a matter of luck. What makes me study? What makes tomorrow’s meetings exciting? What are the changes technology needs to make for food, health and the environment for a sustainable planet and society?

The reason why investing in and caring for a company is fun is because I also make the initial growth of the company together, so we don’t boast about the return on investment, the probability of failure is high, but the company solves social problems beyond a meaningful scale. If it does, it’s important to me: write down my thoughts as I watch the Apple Watch video at dawn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tqB4jnCxqA
